Classroom music
All students at Elimbah SS, from Prep to Year 6, enjoy weekly classroom music lessons. The Elimbah SS Music Program is an active, practical, skills based program in which classroom music activities integrate movement, speech, singing and instrumental playing to a very high degree.
From Prep onwards, children develop their understanding of music and the music making process by actively making their own music during class lessons. Children make music using voice, movement and instruments. Instrument playing begins with non-melodic percussion and quickly progresses to include tuned percussion instruments such as soprano, alto and bass xylophones, chime bars and log-drums, as well as recorders and ukuleles. In all year levels, music making includes inventing, arranging, improvising, composing and performing.
In addition to the above, students in Years 5 and 6 learn guitar – melody and finger-style. The ESS guitar program is a sequential, skills based program in which student achievement and progress is recognized by weekly certificates and medallion awards.
Music extension groups are also on offer, and include Junior Choir (Years 1, 2 & 3), Senior Choir (Years 4, 5 & 6), xylophone and guitar groups. Extra tuition before school and during lunch hours is also available for individuals seeking extension in guitar, ukulele, recorder and/or xylophone playing.
Instrumental music
Our instrumental music program offers group instruction to students from years 4 – 6 in woodwind, brass instruments and percussion instruments (eg, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, drums).
Students involved in this program also participate in our school instrumental band. This well-regarded ensemble performs at events outside the school several times a year.
